BASIC DESIGN - ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES

Basic design is one of the courses that pave the formation for the development of aesthetic sensibility apart from the history of architecture and design etc. It is a known fact that almost all architectural/ design institutions teach the same old book-based basic design which naturally leads to homogenization.

It is important to choose nature itself as the source for learning because nature holds the first principles of beauty.

The course helps the students to closely observe nature and use it to create a design database of points, lines, shape, color, texture, color interaction, light, shadow, movement, shadow, pattern, negative space, form, form transition, etc

Can we initiate a process of connecting the learner to the beauty of nature and the inherent aesthetic element?

The Intention of the course was to enable students to discover the elements and principles of design experientially thereby shifting from a thinking and mind-oriented way of knowing to a sensing and feeling-oriented way.

This was done to initiate learning as an autonomous process whereby the students learn how to create knowledge.

Why this was done to shift the students from mere mental knowledge of written facts or taught facts to experience and thereby knowing for certain the elements and principles of beauty in nature directly.

Learning from secondhand sources -books and teachers - makes students respond with confidence even though they may not have experientially understood the principles. But experientially discovering the elements and principles makes students into lifelong learners, forever transformed into an enquirer, and also learn to hold their knowledge tentative and with humility.

Such a student might find it to give bookish definitions but would perform very well when making designs.

Nature was used as the source for learning as the first principles of beauty do lie in nature.

The students get actually transformed and invite the sense of beauty into their own being instead of knowing just in the mind.
